
Irene Chavez Records Career-High 21 Points In 80-70 Loss To Bakersfield

Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine scored a season-high 43 points in the second half, but fell to Bakersfield, 80-70 in a non-conference game at the Icardo Center Wednesday night.
UCI sophomore guard Irene Chavez, posted a career-high 21 points, going 8-16 from the floor. Her previous career best was six points.
Forward Mokun Fajemisin posted her fourth career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Fajemisin was 8-12 from the free throw line. Senior forward Methlyn Onogomuho also had a double-double, the sixth of her career, recording 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Shereen Sutherland added 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Madison McKenney totaled five points and a team-high five assists. It's the first time this season UCI had four players score in double-digits.
The Roadrunners were led by Tyonna Outland's game-high 27 points. Brooklynn Hinkens hit a pair of threes on her way to 14 points and Batabe Zempare recorded 11 points and eight rebounds, all in the second half. Brittany Sims led CSB on the boards with 10.
Bakersfield led 27-15 with 4:47 left in the first half before Irene Chavez and Mokun Fajemisin combined for 12 points to cut the Roadrunners lead to 33-27 at the break.
UCI scored six unanswered and closed to 51-50 on a Shereen Sutherland put back at 10:12, but the Roadrunners responded with the next eight points to open a 59-50 advantage with 9:01 left. UCI would score another six in a row to narrow the lead to 71-65 with 3:05 remaining before Batabe Zempare scored the next three Roadrunner points to extend the margin back to 74-65 with 1:07.
The Anteaters go to 1-7 overall, while Bakersfield improves to 5-1.
UCI will take a break from action and return to host the University of San Diego on Dec. 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
