
CSU Bakersfield Slips Past UC Irvine, 68-65

Irvine, CA – CSU Bakersfield held off UC Irvine, 68-65 in a non-conference game at the Bren Center Tuesday.
UC Irvine (1-9) was led by forward Mokun Fajemisin and guard Irene Chavez with 16 points each. Fajemisin, who scored 14 of her points in the second half, also collected eight rebounds and two blocks, while Chavez hit 4-8 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line plus added three assists.
UCI senior Methlyn Onogomuho recorded her third double-double of the year with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Forward Brittany Glassow had six points and guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton added six points and tied her career-high with seven assists.
The Anteaters hit a season-high five three-pointers and recorded a season-low 12 turnovers.
Erika Williams came off the bench to lead CSU Bakersfield (7-3) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Tyonna Outland posted 15 points followed by Batabe Zempare with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
UCI jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead, six points coming from Irene Chavez and held Bakersfield scoreless until two free throws by Brittany Sims at 15:34. The Anteaters continued to lead by eight (31-23) at 2: 26 before the Roadrunners would score the final seven points of the half to narrow UCI's advantage to 31-30 at the half.
Bakersfield would out-score UCI 9-2 to start the second half, taking a 39-33 lead at 17:13. The game would be tied twice and a Mokun Fajemisin jumper would put the Anteaters back on top 45-44 at 12:15. Bakersfield would rattle off the next 12 points to open a 56-45 gap with 9:33 left. UCI chipped away and a Methlyn Onogomuho free throw would knot the score at 62-62 with 1:42 to play. A layup by CSUB's Tyonna Outland proceeded a free throw by Shereen Sutherland to keep UCI within one (64-63) at 1:01. Erika Williams would record a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to extend the Bakersfield lead to 66-63 before Raelyn Cheung-Sutton hit a layup with five seconds remaining and the Anteaters were forced to foul Outland on the inbound. She made both free throws and a three-pointer by UCI as time expired banged of the rim to give Bakersfield the 68-65 victory.
UCI will travel to the BTI Invitational Friday-Sunday, beginning with host Purdue at 9:00 a.m. on Dec. 19.
