UC Irvine will entertain the University of San Diego Sunday (Dec. 14) at 4:00 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to one of the next two games to be donated to the UCI Medical Center. In conjunction with the UCI Police Department, UCI student-athletes will be handing out the animals to the children at the hospital.
Sunday's game is the first of five contests in an eight day span for UCI.
San Diego leads the series record 14-13 all-time. The Toreros won the last meeting 79-55 on Dec. 20, 2013 in San Diego.
USD is 7-1 overall and will travel to Seattle before heading to Irvine.
Entering this week, San Diego was leading the nation in offensive rebounds per game at 23 offensive board-per-game. USD is also eighth nationally in blocked shots per game with 6.4. Senior forward Sophia Ederaine is currently tied for seventh in double-doubles (5)and fifth in blocks per game at 3.71.
UCI assistant coach Michelle Augustavo started her collegiate career at USD. She still holds the Torero record for most three-pointers made (10) and attempted (19) which she set versus Clemson on Dec. 21, 2005.
Jenny Dee and Mokun Fajemisin both have brothers that plays on San Diego's men's basketball team.
UCI is currently on a six game losing streak. It is the longest losing skid since the Anteaters dropped eight in a row from Jan. 3-Jan. 31, 2013.
The Anteaters will host Bakersfield on Tuesday (Dec. 16) for the final game of 2014 at home. UCI played the Roadrunners 13 days ago in Bakersfield, losing 80-70.
Sophomore Irene Chavez posted a career-high 21 points against Bakersfield, going 8-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line. Chavez, who's previous career-best was six points, also added two assists, two steals and a block.
Senior forward Methlyn Onogomuho picked up her second double- double of the season against CSUB, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Sophomore Mokun Fajemisin also recorded a double-double with 14 points and a career-best 13 rebounds, her second of the season.
The 43 points in the second half against the Roadrunners, the most the club has recorded in a half this season.
The Anteaters out-rebounded the Roadrunners 47-42. It was the second consecutive game UCI has grabbed more rebounds than the opponent.
UCI has swiped nine steals in each of the last two games, which is a season-high.
Fajemisin leads the team with an 11.0 scoring average. She ranks 14th among Big West players in points and eighth in rebounding (7.1).
Onogomuho leads the team and is ranked seventh in the Big West in rebounding at 7.4 and steals (1.50) per game.
UCI is second in the Big West in defensive rebounds with a 28.29 average.
Raelyn Cheung-Sutton ranks eighth in the conference in assists (3.38) and assist/turnover ratio (1.17).
UCI is ranked fourth in the conference in blocked shots (3.13) and steals (7.63).
