Five Anteaters Earn Spot On All-Big West Teams

IRVINE, Calif. --- Outside hitters Marisa Bubica, Allison Lee and Cassidy Pickrell were named to the All-Big West Conference first team while setter Shelley Anderson and libero Arden Davis were honored on the second team, giving UCI five honorees for the first time since 2007.

 

Bubica becomes a three-time all-conference choice after closing out the regular season tied for first in the Big West with a 4.12 kill average and second in points per set at 4.37. She was voted to three all-tournament teams, including collecting an MVP title at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational. A Big West Player of the Week, Bubica recorded 342 kills and posted 31 digs and owned a .296 hitting percentage to come in at No. 9 among the Big West leaders.  

 

Lee earned her first all-conference nod after a strong senior campaign that was filled with consistent play. She ranked 10th in the Big West in kill average at 3.11 and in digs at 3.24. Lee also was one of the Big West's best from behind the service line, leading the conference in total aces with 44 and tying for second with a .38 ace average. She was one of three Anteaters to place in the top 10 in points per set and posted a 3.75 average. Lee, a Big West Defensive Player of the Week, was the third on the team with 59 total blocks and was named to the the Golden Grizzlies All-Tournament team.  

 

Pickrell, an All-Big West freshman team choice in 2013, received a first-team nod this season. She led the team in kills with 407 and fired 43 aces to tie for ninth in the UCI single-season record books. Coming in at fourth in the Big West with a .37 clip, Pickrell was also fourth in the league in kill average at 3.51 and sixth in points at 4.07 per set. Pickrell was named to two all-tournament teams this year and totaled 12 double-double matches.   

 

Anderson was also honored for the second straight year after being voted to the all-freshman team last season. A 2014 second-team honoree, Anderson ended the year as the Big West leader in assist average at 10.87. A sophomore, Anderson dished out 1,174 assists and is already in UCI's career records at No. 5 with 2,224. She proved to be a versatile talent, posting 23 aces to go along with 224 digs and was fourth on the team with 47 total blocks.

 

Davis earned her first all-conference award after topping the Big West leaders with a 4.44 dig average. With 515 digs, Davis finished seventh in the UCI single-season records. She topped out at 34 digs in a win against UC Santa Barbara to tie the fourth-best single-match mark, set in 2011 by former standout, Kristin Winkler.

 

The Anteaters finished the season 19-12 overall and fifth in the Big West at 9-7. The 19 wins are the second-most recorded by a Paula Weishoff-led team in her six-year tenure. Weishoff guided the Anteaters tlo 22 wins in her first year in 2009.

Long Beach State swept the top awards with Jenelle Hudson winning Big West Player of the Year honors. Ashley Murrary was voted the Big West Freshman of the Year while Brian Gimmilarro was named Coach of the Year. The full list of all-conference winners can be found here.
