Pete Fernandez Earns Medalist Honors in Anteater Invitational

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- UC Irvine junior Pete Fernandez earned his first collegiate title as he claimed medalist honors in the 34th Anteater Invitational that concluded Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Fernandez finished with a 54-hole total of 3-under par 210 after carding an even-par 71 in the final round.  Kevin Lee of Long Beach State and Kyler Sauer from Cal State Northridge tied for second place with scores of 212.

UCI and Sacramento State tied for second in the team competition with three-round scores of 873 as Long Beach State won the title at 869.

UCI senior Travis Russell shot a 74 Tuesday and finished seventh at 217, junior Bhuvan Potluri (73) was 11th at 219 for his best collegiate finish, senior Ryan Knapp (80) placed 34th at 231 and sophomore Jacob Schulze (76) was 37th at 232.

Freshmen Ryan O'Connor and Bryan Shin competed as individuals in the tournament.  O'Connor shot 73 in the final round to finish 23rd at 224 and Shin placed 40th at 239 after a final-round 81.

Coach Paul Smolinski's Anteaters return to action Feb. 17-18 in The Folino Invitational at the Industry Hills Eisenhower (Ike) course.
