UC Irvine Gets Road Split In Utah With Win Over Bengals
September 14, 2013 | Women's Volleyball
OREM, Utah --- Marisa Bubica and Aly Squires were named to the all-tournament team after putting away 13 kills apiece as UC Irvine (7-3) finished the week at 2-2 after a 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23 win over Idaho State Saturday to conclude action at the Wolverine Classic.
Bubica made it four out of six matches of hitting .400 or better after pounding a team-leading .429 (13k-1e-28ta). Arielle Manz was errorless offensively, totaling five kills in 12 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage and Shelley Anderson also posted a .417 clip with six kills in 12 attempts with one error to go along with 39 assists and six digs. Cassidy Pickrell reached double-figure kills with 11 and led the team with three aces while Arden Davis topped the Anteaters with 18 digs
The two sides stayed within striking distance of one another in the first set with 10 ties and three lead changes. At 19-19, the Anteaters burst out for a 3-1 run to work a two-point edge (22-20) that they would protect. The Bengals edged to one point at 23-22 but Bubica delivered to give UCI set point and an unforced error by Marissa Todd would close out the first frame.
UCI took the early advantage in the second with a 7-3 lead on a kill from Bubica. ISU again knotted the score at 10-10 on an error by Pickrell and then at 11-11 went on a 4-0 run for the 15-11 lead. Alydia Fields-Grimm and Desiree Nielson denied Bubica at the net to extend the lead to six (20-14) and the Bengals turned to Filer again for the set-winner.
ISU used the momentum to take an 8-4 lead but could not hold off the rallying Anteaters, who quickly tied the score at 8-8 on back-to-back service winners from Squires. With ISU leading 20-19, a key ace by Pickrell would cap a 4-1 run by the Anteaters for the 24-20 lead. An ISU kill, paired with block on Fleming cut the lead to two but Sommer Reeder's unforced error would end the set.
After a 4-1 lead by ISU was erased by the Anteaters, neither team was able to build a comfortable lead. The tension broke at 21-21 as an ISU service error was followed by another ace from Pickrell to give UCI a two-point lead (23-21) and force a Bengal timeout. Pickrell committed a service error out of the break but Fleming converted on an Anderson assist and following a put-away from Tressa Lyman, Squires answered the call for UCI with a kill to win the match.
