
Whtiney Pavlik, April Ross Come In Fourth At FIVB World Championships

IRVINE, Calif. --- Anteater alumna Whitney Pavlik (2004-05), playing with new partner, April Ross (Costa Mesa), came in fourth Saturday at the Federation Internationale de Volleyball Beach (FIVB) World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland.
Third seeded Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Ross fell to Brazil's No. 13 Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas in the bronze medal match, 21-18, 21-15.
The U.S. pair reached the semifinals but lost 21-15, 21-19 to Germany's No. 17 Karla Borger and Britta Buhte, who went on to finish with the silver.
Pavlik and Ross advanced to the semifinals via two wins Friday. The duo drummed Spain's Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan, 21-13, 21-15 in the Round of 16. Then in quarterfinal action, Pavlik and Ross took care of Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, seeded No. 18, 19-21, 21-19, 15-13.
Pavlik and Ross defeated Switzerland's No. 24 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré, 21-18, 21-16 in the Round of 32 for a July 4th victory.
The pair opened pool play last week with a win over U.S. teammates No. 22-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar, 21-15, 21-15. The team then rolled over Canada's No. 27 Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas, 21-11, 21-18 Tuesday and went undefeated in pool play at 3-0 following a 21-19, 21-15 win over No. 46 Laura Bloem and Rebekka Kadijk of the Nederlands.
