IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's basketball team will host 11 home games in 2013-14 and battle eight teams that advanced to post-season action last year as the Anteaters released the upcoming schedule Monday.
The Anteaters will start the season, playing 11 of its 14 non-conference games on the road, but for the first time since beginning with San Diego State in 2009, UCI opens the year at home. After an exhibition with Irvine neighbor Concordia on Nov. 7, the Anteaters open the year facing South Dakota, who has advanced to the post-season the last three years, on Nov. 10.
After taking on the Coyotes, the Anteaters play the next nine games on the road before returning to Irvine for a battle with New Mexico State on Dec. 18.
In between the two home games, UCI will visit Pepperdine (Nov. 14), Nevada (Nov. 17), Denver (Nov. 21), Idaho (Nov. 23) and Sacramento State.
The Anteaters will also participate in two tournaments beginning with a Thanksgiving Invitational at Loyola Marymount on Nov. 29-30 which will feature Montana, who won the Big Sky regular season and tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, North Dakota State and the host Lions. Not getting enough of Montana, UCI will travel to the 33rd Lady Griz Classic on Dec. 6-7. Idaho, an NCAA tournament participant along with WNIT attendee Appalachian State round out the tournament field.
"We have a challenging number of non-conference road games to begin the year, but it will prepare this group for conference play," head coach Doug Oliver said. "We will play teams with a variety of styles and it will give us a chance to work on several facets of the game of basketball. Playing in the Montana tournament will be important because of the atmosphere there."
Games against San Diego (Dec.20) and Washington (Dec. 30) on the road end the year before a home contest versus La Verne on Jan. 2 completes the non-conference slate. The game with the Leopards is a double-header with the UCI men's team.
The Anteaters start the Big West schedule with another double-header at Long Beach State on Jan. 9 in a Black & Blue Rivalry Series presented by Duke's of Huntington Beach.
A home contest against UC Riverside on Jan. 11 will be followed by road games at Cal State Fullerton (Jan. 16), Cal State Northridge (Jan. 23) and Hawaii (Jan. 25).
The Anteaters will then entertain six of its next seven opponents at the Bren, beginning with UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 30 and Big West tournament champion Cal Poly on Feb. 2. Another double-header and Black & Blue Rivalry game with Long Beach State on Feb. 6 and a test against UC Davis on Feb. 8 rounds out the homestand.
After a game at UC Riverside (Feb. 15), the Anteaters will face Hawaii on Feb. 20 and Cal State Northirdge on Feb. 22. A road trip to the Central Coast against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly will lead into the regular season home finale against cross-county rival Cal State Fullerton on Mar. 6. UCI ends the conference campaign traveling to UC Davis on Feb. 8.
The league schedule leads up to the eight-team Big West Tournament, which begins at Long Beach's Walter Pyramid on Mar. 11-12 before moving to the Honda Center on Mar. 14-15.
"We have everyone back that played quality minutes last year," Oliver noted. "We beat some teams last year that showed we can compete in the Big West. We just need to be more consistent this year."
UCI ended last year with a 9-21 record, losing 10 of those games by 10 points or less. Highlighting the list of returnees is senior Camille Buckley who was a second team All-Big West honoree in 2013. The forward, who averaged 11.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game overall, was the only conference player to average a double-double in Big West games.
