Lacey Surak Wins Big West Javelin Title

 

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Junior Lacey Surak captured the title in the javelin throw Saturday at the Big West Conference Championships in Northridge.

Surak's winning mark was 147-2 as she became UCI's first league champion in the event.  Melanie Speech finished seventh with a throw of 123-4.

Freshman Megan Benson placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.86 for the third-fastest time in Anteater history.  Sophomore Paige Bushnell was third in 13.92 for the No. 4 time in the UCI record book.

Itos Aikhionbare finished fourth in the discus throw at 158-9 while KayC Wharton (60.85) and Bushnell (61.31) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles.  Wharton's time ranks seventh in UCI history.

Samia Sailinuu, with a seventh-place finish in the 1500 meters of 4:40.25 and Carlotta Pham, who was seventh in the 5,000 meters (17:53.30), also earned team points for UCI.

The Anteaters' 4x400 relay of Surak, Wharton, Bushnell and Lauren Hackney placed seventh with a time of 3:45.43.

The 4x100 relay of Speech, Wharton, Kaulyn Lee-McNeill and Bushnell finished eighth in 47.83.

UCI was eighth in the team competition with 57 points as UC Davis won the title with 172.50.
