IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI racked up its first player of the week award in water polo thanks to a stellar week from sophomore keeper Jillian Yocum.
Yocum shut down the sixth-ranked San Diego State Aztecs with seven saves and three steals to put UCI at 1-0 in Big West play following a 6-5 win. Yocum would continue her dominance with a 13-save performance over the red-hot Tritons of UC San Diego to defeat them 8-6.
The 'Eaters sit at 11-6 and currently sixth in the nation. Yocum has provided 10 of those wins in 409 minutes played. Yocum has stopped 155 shots giving her 351 on her career, 14 behind Lauren Davis for third all-time, and has also posted a 6.02 goals-against-average for an Anteater team that has allowed 103 goals in 17 matches.
Yocum's honor is very deserving coming off a brilliant freshman campaign in 2012 and a 2013 season that has already seen her stop 10 or more shots in six matches.
For Yocum, it is her first player of the week honor, and UCI's 15th overall. The Anteaters claimed the distinction four times in 2012.
UCI switches gears to take on D-III powers Pomona-Pitzer (12:00 p.m.) and Occidental (4:40 p.m.) on Friday, March 8th before returning to Big West action.
