DAVIS, Calif. --- UCI's return to Big West action was filled with drama as the 'Eaters and Aggies fought back and forth Friday afternoon at Schall Aquatics Center. Both teams traded leads a number of times before Cambria Shockley drained the crushing blow for the 7-6 victory with just one second left in regulation.
The UCI (14-7, 2-1) offense had gone silent for a few periods before launching a full-fledged attack in the fourth period. UC Davis (12-13, 0-3) took at 4-3 lead into halftime and 5-4 lead into the fourth period as the Anteaters quickly reversed that with early-period goals from seniors Kelsey Klatt and Taylor Morrison.
UC Davis would respond to tie it with 1:19 left setting up the fantastic finish. After a UC Irvine timeout with 17 seconds to go. Cambria Shockley would then deliver with a lob shot that tipped of Aggie keeper Riane Woods outstretched hand and off the far post and in for the game-winner.
The 'Eater offense came alive for those three fourth-period goals after jumping out to a 3-2 lead in the first, but were turned away for just one score total between the second and third periods.
McKenna Mitchell returned to her scoring ways with a pair of goals, both coming in the first period. Seniors Hannah Croghan and Layne Kipp rounded out UCI's scorers.
Jillian Yocum was not heavily tested, but did stop six shots.
UCI improves to 2-1 in Big West play, and continues its road trip with another Big West stop when it goes up against 20th-ranked Pacific on Saturday, March 30th at 12:00 p.m.
