
Sam Hyams Named UCI's Big West Male-Scholar Athlete of Year

IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior Sam Hyams was recognized as UC Irvine's Big West Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Thursday.
Hyams and women's volleyball player Kristin Winkler, UCI's Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, were honored along with their peers from the nine other Big West universities, at a Scholar-Athlete Banquet Thursday morning at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Garden Grove.
Hyams, a distance runner for the 'Eaters, finished 15th in the 2012 Big West Conference Cross Country Championships. He was fifth of 229 runners at the adidas/UCI Invitational, eighth at the Highlander Invitational and 26th at the Stanford Invitational.
In track, Hyams ranks No. 7 in UCI history in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:45.19. He placed third in the 1500 at the 2011 Big West Track & Field Championships and qualified for the 2011 NCAA Track & Field West Preliminary Round.
A Political Science major, Hyams hopes to intern in Washington, D.C., after graduation prior to entering law school in 2014. He is a Golden Key Club member and is enrolled in the UCI Political Science Honors Program. Hyams is currently interning with a law firm that focuses on improving the rights of immigrants and people with disabilities.
The Big West Conference annually honors a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year from each of the member institutions.
