Big West Honors for 'Eaters

IRVINE, Calif.  --- Four UC Irvine players earned a variety of 2012-13 Big West Conference honors, announced by the league office Monday morning.

Senior guard Daman Starring was named to the All-Big West Second Team after earning honorable mention recognition a year ago.

Starring leads UCI in scoring at 13.3 points per game with six 20-point games this season.  He has led the 'Eaters in scoring 10 games this season and has scored 1,012 points in his UCI career.  Starring has 144 career threes to rank No. 7 in Anteater history.

Senior post Adam Folker received the Big West's "Best Hustle"Award for the second straight season and he also was named to the All-Big West Honorable Mention squad.  Folker leads the Big West in field-goal percentage at .581 and he ranks 12th in Anteater history with 604 career rebounds.

Point guard Alex Young was named Big West co-Freshman of the Year, along with Isaac Fotu from Hawai'i.  Young set a UCI freshman single-season record with 132 assists.  He ranks second in the Big West in assists (4.1) and assist/turnover ratio (2.6), plus he is averaging 9.2 points per game.

Sophomore post Will Davis II received the Big West's "Best Defensive Player" Award.  He leads the conference with 78 blocked shots, a new UCI single-season record.  Davis has 133 career blocks in 62 career games.

Coach Russell Turner's 'Eaters, seeded fourth, face No. 5 seed Hawai'i Thursday night at approximately 8:30 in a Big West Conference Tournament quarterfinal at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

UCI is 18-14 overall and finished league play with an 11-7 record.  The 'Eaters have won six of their past seven games and eight of the last 11.

The 11 conference wins are the program's most in 10 years, since the 2002-03 team finished 13-5.  The 18 overall victories are the most since the 2007-08 squad was 18-16.
