'EATERS HOST 49ERS ON SENIOR DAY
● Third-year head coach Russell Turner's UC Irvine squad (16-13, 9-6 Big West) hosts Long Beach State Saturday in the regular-season home finale at the Bren Center.
● Saturday is Senior Day at the Bren as Anteater seniors Derick Flowers, Adam Folker, Daman Starring and Michael Wilder will be recognized prior to the game.
● Saturday's game is also a 'Black & Blue Rivalry Series" game presented by Duke's of Huntington Beach. The annual series compiles points on head-to-head matchups between the schools in all common sports.
● The 'Eaters have won four straight and six of their last eight games. UCI's 9-6 Big West record is the program's best after 15 games since the 2007-08 team had a similar mark.
● The 16 overall wins are the most for UCI since the 2007-08 squad finished 18-16.
● UCI is 11-1 at home this season, including 8-0 in Big West games, as the Anteaters look to go undefeated at home in conference play for the first time since the 2000-01 team went 8-0 in league games at the Bren Center en route to the program's first Big West regular-season title. That team finished 25-5 overall and 15-1 in Big West play.
● UCI and Long Beach State are meeting for the 91st time Saturday with the 49ers leading the series, 57-33. LBSU has won the last five meetings, including 81-59 at the Walter Pyramid Jan. 26 in a game that the 49ers led by just six points with nine minutes left before ending with a 25-9 run.
UC IRVINE NOTES
● UCI is 9-0 this season when holding the opposition to under 60 points and 12-3 when leading at halftime. UCI is 11-5 this season when the opponents have shot below 40 percent from the field and 9-4 when outrebounding its opponent.
● With his 14 points in last Saturday's 77-70 win at UT Arlington, senior Michael Wilder has 1,002 points and 546 rebounds in his UCI career. His 546 career boards rank 16th in Anteater history. He is the 21st member of the 1,000-points club at UCI and Wilder is one of 16 UCI players to have scored 1,000 points and grabbed 500 rebounds in their careers.
● Wilder's 208 career threes rank third in UCI history, trailing just Michael Hunter (236) and Ross Schraeder (233). Daman Starring has 142 career threes and is tied with Scott Brooks for No. 7 in the Anteater record book.
● Senior post Adam Folker was named Big West Conference Player of the Week after averaging 14.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in last week's wins over Pacific and UT Arlington. Folker has 597 career rebounds to rank 12th in the Anteater record book.
● Folker leads the Big West in field-goal percentage at .581 on the season.
● Sophomore post Will Davis II, with 65 blocked shots this season, has established a new single-season school record, breaking the previous mark of 55 he set last season.
● Freshman point guard Alex Young, with 121 assists this season, has the most assists in a season by a UCI player since Aaron Fitzgerald had 190 in 2005-06.
● The lineup of Alex Young, Daman Starring, Michael Wilder, Adam Folker and Will Davis II has started 18 games this season, including the last 14. The 'Eaters are 12-6 overall with that starting unit, 9-5 in league games.
● As of Friday, UCI ranks 13th in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (.381), 14th in assists per game (16.2) and 30th in assist/turnover ratio (1.26).
● Alex Young ranks 21st in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (2.57) and Will Davis II is 34th in blocked shots per game (2.32).
● For all games, UCI ranks first in the Big West Conference in field-goal percentage defense (.381), three-point field goal percentage defense (.320), scoring margin (+4.8), rebounds per game (39.1), assists per game (16.2) and blocked shots per game (4.4).
● Individually for all games, Adam Folker leads the Big West in field-goal percentage (.581) and he is sixth in offensive rebounds per game (2.7). Will Davis II tops the league in blocked shots per game (2.3) and Alex Young is second in assist/turnover ratio (2.6) and third in assists per game (4.2). Daman Starring is third in three-point field goal percentage (.443), sixth in three-point field goals made per game (2.2) and eighth in free-throw percentage (.770).
● In conference games only, Davis is first in blocked shots per game (2.3) and Young is first in assist/turnover ratio (2.9) and third in assists (4.7). Adam Folker is third in field-goal percentage (.583) and in offensive rebounds per game (3.1). Davis is fifth in field-goal percentage at .567 and sixth in rebounding (6.7).
DEFEND THE BREN
● The Bren Events Center on the UCI campus marked its 26th anniversary in January. The center opened Jan. 8, 1987, when the 'Eaters defeated Utah State, 118-96, on the strength of 43 points by Scott Brooks. Brooks is head coach of the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder and the 2010 NBA Coach of the Year.
● UCI is 204-145 all-time at the Bren Center. The 'Eaters are 123-48 (.719) in the Bren dating back to February 2000. UCI is 11-1 at home this season, including 8-0 in league games.
'EATERS TOP MAVERICKS
● UCI defeated UT Arlington, 77-70, last Saturday in a Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters game in Arlington, Tex. Five UC Irvine players scored in double figures and the Anteaters shot 66.7 percent from the field in the second half en route to the win.
● Senior Adam Folker and sophomore Will Davis II scored 16 points each, seniors Michael Wilder and Daman Starring recorded 14 and 13 points, respectively, and junior Chris McNealy added 12.
● Folker pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Davis added six boards and five blocked shots as the Anteaters improved to 16-13 overall. Freshman Alex Young also had six rebounds and Wilder registered eight assists for UCI, which shot 52 percent from the field for the game.
A LOOK AT LONG BEACH STATE
● Sixth-year head coach Dan Monson's 49ers lead the Big West with a 13-2 mark in league play.
● Senior James Ennis leads LBSU in scoring (17.1) and rebounding (6.7).
● Sophomore Mike Caffey is averaging 12.1 points and junior Tony Freeland 10.7 points per contest.
