UC IRVINE HAS WON 5 OF LAST 6

● Fourth-year head coach Russell Turner's UC Irvine squad (5-3) has won five of its past six games.  The Anteaters are coming off a 79-53 win at Sacramento State Saturday night, outscoring the Hornets 57-21 in the final 23 ½ minutes.

● Senior guard Chris McNealy led UCI with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting against Sac State and he added six rebounds and three assists.  Freshman guard Luke Nelson had 14 points while sophomore guard Alex Young scored 12 points (5-of-7 shooting) and had a game-high six assists.  Junior forward Will Davis II, who attended Sacramento High School, had a game-high nine rebounds against Sac State Saturday.

● Davis was named MVP of last weekend's 2K Sports Classic Irvine Subregional after averaging 11.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in three games.  Alex Young was selected to the all-tournament team.

● 7-6 freshman center Mamadou Ndiaye, the nation's tallest player, broke his own UCI single-game record with 10 blocked shots in last Sunday's (Nov. 24) win over Eastern Washington.  His previous record was nine in the Nov. 14 victory at Washington. 

● Last Sunday's 81-58 win over Eastern Washington marked Coach Turner's 50th victory at UCI.  He recently received a contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

● UC Irvine plays five of its next six games on the road.  The only home game in that stretch is Saturday night against Pepperdine at the Bren Events Center on the UCI campus.


UC IRVINE NOTES

● UCI head coach Russell Turner was an assistant on Mike Montgomery's Stanford staff from 2000-04.

● UCI has won its five games this season by an average of 24 points.

● The Anteaters are 4-0 this season when holding the opposition to a field-goal percentage of under 40 percent, including Sacramento State this past Saturday (33.9 percent).

● UCI has shot at least 50 percent from the field in six of its first eight games this season, including 53.8 percent at Sacramento State Saturday.  The Anteaters shot a season-high 59.6 percent in the 86-72 win at Washington Nov. 14. 

● The Anteaters are shooting 51.2 percent for the season and limiting their opponents to 39.9 percent.

● UCI had a season-low six turnovers in last Sunday's 81-58 win over Eastern Washington.

● UCI is +8.0 in rebounding margin, 41.8 to 33.8.

Mamadou Ndiaye is shooting 73.7 percent from the field and he has 29 blocked shots in season's first eight games.  Nineteen of those blocks have come in two games:  10 vs. Eastern Washington last Sunday (Nov. 24) and nine at Washington Nov. 14.

● Junior forward Will Davis II is shooting 61.5 percent from the field on 40 of 65.  Davis is UCI's career leader in blocked shots with 155, including a school-record 88 last season.

● Sophomore guard Alex Young leads UCI with 37 assists this season and he has an assist/turnover ratio of 2.85.

● Young has hit 11 of 22 threes this season, junior guard Travis Souza 12 of 27 and freshman guard Luke Nelson 12 of 36.

● UCI has won its last two games against Pac-12 opponents:  86-72 at Washington Nov. 14 and 61-54 at USC last Dec. 20.


ABOUT CALIFORNIA

● Sixth-year head coach Mike Montgomery's Cal team is 5-2 but is coming off consecutive losses to Syracuse (92-81) and Dayton (82-64) in Maui.

● Senior guard Justin Cobbs leads the Bears in scoring at 15.6 points per game and he also tops the team with 41 assists.
