'Eaters Win Bragging Rights With 7-5 Win Over Ants

IRVINE, Calif. --- The seven-inning game went into extras and Jonathan Munoz, yesterday's walk-off hero for the 'Eaters, won it again with a run-scoring, sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth in an eventual 7-5 win over the Ants Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark.

The 'Eaters, the designated visiting team, got on the board in the top of the fourth on a single from Taylor Sparks to score Grant Palmer against starter Andrew Morales.

The Ants tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Mikey Duarte singled in Connor Spencer with two outs but Ryan Cooper got caught in a run down to end the inning.

Raul Silva-Martinez delivered for the 'Eaters in the fifth with single to capitalize on Andrew Martinez's one-out double. However, the Ants took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Spencer's two-out, two-RBI single up the middle, driving in Sam Moore (fielder's choice) and Chris Rabago (single).

The tide turned back to the 'Eaters favor in the sixth as Sparks belted a one-out triple against Max Weinstein. The freshman righty handed the ball to Moore, who gave up a pair of run-scoring hits to Kris Paulino and Justin Castro. Andrew Martinez capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to center to give the team a 5-3 lead.

John Brontsema hit a two-out triple to left-center for the Ants in the sixth, driving in Adam Alcantara to cut the lead to one at 5-4. Spencer then delivered again for the Ants with a single past the diving Andrew Martinez as Chris Rabago, who had doubled off Jimmy Litchfield to start the bottom of the seventh, came around to plate the tying run.

Evan Cassolato suffered the loss after giving up two runs in the 'Eater eighth while Litchfield picked up the win for the 'Eaters after two innings of one-run, one-hit relief.

Sparks and Castro led the 'Eaters with two hits apiece while Spencer paced the ants by batting 3 for 4 with three RBI.

The two teams will play a series finale Wed. at 2:00 p.m.
