DROP SHOTS

UCI matches have featured six singles matches that have gone to a third set. Five of the six winners lost the first set.

Kristina Smith became the first 'Eater to take down a ranked opponent this season with a straight-set win over No. 118 Klara Vyskocilova of Tulane on Saturday.

UCI's schedule features eight ranked schools including UCLA, USC twice, Pepperdine, LSU, Tulane, Wyoming, and Big West opponents Long Beach State and Hawaii.

Five of UCI's opponents sport ranked singles players totaling 13 players in all.

Four of UCI's opponents claim ranked doubles pairs totaling eight duos in all.

BREAK POINTS

UCI looks to reach the Big West final for the 10th time in the last 14 years.

Kristina Smith leads all active Anteaters with 57 career dual match wins and 42 career doubles wins. She is currently 15th in singles wins and 14th in doubles wins all-time.

STRAIGHT SETS

Taking a look at the prospective lineup based on those put out by Coach Edles in the early going:

1. Kristina Smith 13-5 as No. 1 in 2012
2. Marivick Mamiit 1-1 as No. 4 in 2012
3. Franziska Goettsching 9-12 as No. 3 in 2012
4. Sarah Gong 8 wins in fall play
5. Ali Facey 1-2 as No. 5 in 2012
6. Kat Facey 9-9 as No. 4 in 2012

Doubles lineup based on fall results:

1. Gong / Smith 2-2 in fall matches
2. Mamiit / Stadfelt 9-0 in fall matches
3. K. Facey / Schweyer 3-2 in fall matches

Marivick Mamiit has won eight of her last 11 matches dating back to 2012.

Kristina Smith has won five of her last six matches dating back to 2012. She was the lone Anteater to beat a ranked opponent in 2012 when she swept No. 117 Julia Wais of SDSU on Feb. 18th.

UCI used 13 different doubles pairs in 2012. Eight of those pairs spent just one match together.

CHANGE OVERS

Sarah Gong's singles win against San Jose State was the first of her career.

Sarah Stadfelt won her first career doubles match on Sunday against San Jose State

FALL RECAP

UCI enjoyed a beneficial fall slate in the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate and UH Rainbow invitationals.

Sarah Gong was the B Flight singles runner-up of the CSUF Intercollegiates. She finished the fall season with an 8-2 record.

Sarah Stadfelt defeated Nakisa Vahdat to claim the CSUF Intercollegiate C Flight singles title. Stadfelt finished the fall at 7-2 while Vahdat went 5-3.

Stadfelt partnered with Marivick Mamiit to win the CSUF Intercollegiate B Flight doubles championship. They went 9-0 as a duo in the fall.

Other notable fall marks were Alison Klein (5-3), Marivick Mamiit  (4-3), and Ali Facey (4-3). In doubles, A. Facey/Schweyer and Klein/Vahdat each went 3-2.

MATCHES BRUIN

The second-ranked Bruins are 2-0 early in the 2013 season with sweeps over USD and Washington. They reached the NCAA Final in 2012 with a 26-3 record before falling to Florida.

UCLA returns top player Robin Anderson to the mix after a 21-2 dual record in 2012. Other notable players include Pamela Montez and Skylar Morton for the Bruins.

UC Irvine is looking for its first point against UCLA since falling 5-2 in 2008.

SUPER SUNDAY

The Lions are currently 1-0 in the early going after a sweep of Concordia. UCI is the second matchup of a Big West weekend. LMU hosts Long Beach State Friday before meeting UCI for its first road match of the season.

The Lions return 10 players to the roster include top players April Bisharat, Tory Parravi, and Claudia Razzeto.

UCI has won the last two meetings 6-1 each time.
