IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to rebound from a rough first half as the Stanford Cardinal earned another win over the 'Eaters, 2-0, Friday night at Anteater Stadium.
UCI's (3-1-0) offense sputtered in the first half as it was unable to get a shot off. In the entire match, the Anteaters mustered six shots with three on target.
The best chance came from freshman Matthew Tilley who received a cross from Marco Franco with just over 10 minutes to play, but his header sailed just high.
The match was a very physical affair with the teams combining for 36 fouls and five yellow cards.
Stanford (2-2-0) nearly knocked a goal in in the first 15 seconds of the match. It would take the lead in the 27th minute after Adam Jahn capitalized on a penalty kick called after a ball in the box hit the arm of a UCI defender.
Dersu Abolfathi would stretch the lead in the 42nd minute as Stanford took a 2-0 lead into the half.
UCI keeper Michael Breslin was able to stand his ground making four key saves throughout the match and pouncing on others to keep the Cardinal attack at bay and the 'Eaters in the match.
UCI now stands at 3-1-0 on the season, and head up to Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA to play the 14th-ranked Bruins on Sunday, Sept. 9th at 2:00 p.m. The match will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
