Sacramento State Stings UC Irvine Late, 2-1
September 28, 2012 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- In its first ever Big West conference match, the Sacramento State Hornets came into Anteater Stadium and found a way to pull out the 2-1 victory over the host Anteaters in front of 1,670 fans.
Sacramento State (4-4-1, 1-0-0) got the game-winner in the 84th minute from Isaac Ikyurav. He shot down the right wing with the ball and danced around an UCI defender before nailing a strike that tipped UCI keeper Elliot Farmer's fingers and into the top left corner.
For the Hornets, it was their only lead of the match after they tied it up in the 30th minute. Gabe Silveira smashed a bounding ball from 10 yards out that hit off a UCI defender straight up and landed just behind Farmer in the net to tie the match up.
UCI (3-6-1, 0-1-0) took the early advantage in the 22nd minute thanks to Gor Kirakosyan's team-leading fourth goal of the year. Enrique Cardenas fed Matthew Tilley down the right wing as he punted a high cross into the box. The ball landed in the box and Kirakosyan crushed a wild, roundhouse kick into the top right of the goal for UCI's early 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the 'Eaters were unable to capitalize on any other chances in the match. UCI outshot the Hornets 15-10 and 8-3 on shots on target. Hornet keeper Bryan Oliver finished with seven saves with his biggest one coming midway through the second half as Kirakosyan turned a hard cross on net that Oliver smothered.
For Cardenas, it was his second assist of the year to tie him with Kirakosyan for the team lead. Tilley notched his first assist and point as an Anteater.
Farmer fell in his first start recording one save.
UCI returns to Big West action on Sunday, Sept. 30th with a 4:00 p.m. match against the UC Davis Aggies.
