STORY LINES
- UCI will be featured on the Pac-12 Network Sunday at 12:00 p.m. when it takes on Oregon State.
- The 2012 scoring breakdown has seen five goals from juniors, four goals from sophomores, and two goals from freshmen.
- UCI has scored just one first-half goal in 2012, which came in its win over LIU Brooklyn, the other 10 have come in the second half.
- Their last meeting was the first time in a meeting between UCI and Gonzaga that there was not a shutout.
- The Anteaters have never scored at Oregon State.
ON THE HORIZON
- The Anteaters play 10 regular season non-conference matches: seven on the road, five outside California, and three against 2011 College Cup participants (UCLA, New Mexico, and Louisville). They are currently 1-2-1 on the road in 2012.
- UCI currently has four ranked opponents on its ledger: No. 6 UCSB, No. 7 New Mexico, No. 14 UCLA, and No. 25 UC Riverside. Louisville is currently receiving votes.
- Oregon State is the only school that both UCI's men's and women's soccer teams play in 2012.
QUICK HITS
- The Big West Conference has been split into the North and South Divisions with the addition of its eighth member, Sacramento State, in 2012. UCI will face each school in the North Division once while facing each school in the South Division twice, once at each location.
- Gor Kirakosyan earned Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 3rd.
- Cameron Iwasa and Pavle Atanackovic were named to the TLC Lobo Invitational All-Tournament Team.
- UC Irvine finished second in the Big West in goals and goals-against-average in 2011.
NUMEROLOGY
- The Anteaters were the only Big West school with two players (Miguel Ibarra, Christian Hernandez) scoring 24 points or more in 2011.
- UCI keeper Andrew Fontein played all 2,160 minutes in net for UCI. Only five keepers played more minutes in 2011 than Fontein; all of them played in the Elite Eight and none of them played every one of their school's minutes.
- UCI played in front of attendances of over 1,000 fans six times in 2011. In those matches, UCI went 5-1 outscoring their opponents 12-5. In 2012, UCI is 0-1-0 in 2012 after falling to No. 14 UCLA in front of a crowd of 1,454.
STICKING THEIR TONGUE OUT
- YOUNG GUNS: Underclassmen came through with UCI's goals this weekend. Freshman Pavle Atanackovic scored his first two in his career Friday vs. Missouri State while sophomore Cameron Iwasa scored with three seconds left against No. 7 New Mexico to force overtime.
- RETURN OF T: Junior Tarek Morad, the only first-year player to play in every match in 2011, returned to the pitch last weekend. As a reward, he clocked all 209 minutes of action.
- EXTRA TIME: UCI played its first two overtime matches of the year last weekend. The Anteaters went 4-2-1 in overtime matches in 2011.
PRESEASON
- UC Irvine begins the season with its highest ranking in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason rankings at 13th in the nation.
- UC Irvine found its way onto the College Soccer News' (15th) and TopDrawerSoccer.com's (13th) preseason rankings.
- The Anteaters were picked to finish first in the Big West South Division receiving six of eight first-place votes
- Senior defender Everett Pitts and junior midfielder Christopher Santana represented UCI on the Preseason All-Big West squad.
SOCCER AT THE NEXT LEVEL
- Brad Evans and the Seattle Sounders FC are currently in second place in the Western Conference at 13-6-9 after a 1-1 draw at Portland over the weekend. He has two goals and three assists in 27 starts with the Sounders.
- In the Sounders' all-time records, Evans ranks fifth in games played, tied for fifth in goals (14), and tied for fifth in assists (15).
- Two Anteaters were drafted in the 2011 MLS Supplemental draft. Miguel Ibarra went in the second round with Andrew Fontein following in the third round.
- Ibarra plays alongside Amani Walker with the Minnesota Stars FC. Ibarra has three goals and four assists to compliment Walker's seven goals and five assists.
- Fontein is currently with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL, but has yet to see playing time.
ZIGGING AND ZAGGING
- Head Coach Einar Thorarinsson is in his 16th season at Gonzaga.
- The Bulldogs finished 2011 with a record of 4-10-3. They are currently 2-3-0 in 2012.
- This is the second consecutive tournament Gonzaga is apart of with Oregon State. They both took part in the Gonzaga Nike Classic last weekend along with UCSB.
- Neither team will face each other in either tournament, but they did meet in between tournaments with Oregon State winning, 3-0, on home turf.
- Clark Phillips, Lars Ludwigs, and Conner Bevans have each scored two of the Bulldogs' six goals.
- Ryan Caballero has played all but 10 minutes this season allowing nine goals while stopping 17 shots.
- Gonzaga lost at UCI in 2011 in OT, 1-0.
BEAVER FEVER
- Head Coach Steve Simmons is in his fourth year as head coach in his second stint at Oregon State. He was an associate head coach for two years.
- Between Oregon State jobs, Simmons coached at Northern Illinois for six years.
- The Beavers are 3-2-1 in 2012 with losses at No. 7 Indiana and No. 13 Notre Dame and a draw with No. 4 UCSB. They've won their three matches by a combined 13-0.
- Sixteen Beavers have scored a point this year. Khiry Shelton leads the team with three goals and seven points while Roberto Farfan leads all Beavers with four assists.
- Matt Bersano has a 1.02 goals-against-average in 530 minutes in net.
- OSU plays common opponents UCLA and Stanford twice. They defeated Sacramento State, 4-0, to open the season.
