STANFORD, Calif. ---- Sixth-ranked UC Irvine outscored UC San Diego 3-0 in overtime in defeating the 11th-ranked Tritons, 11-8, in the NorCal Tournament at Stanford's Belardi Pool Saturday.
With the victory, the undefeated 'Eaters (8-0) meet No. 3 California at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. The Bears defeated Air Force, 19-2, earlier Saturday.
Bojan Hrlec, Winston Newland, Nick Pfeil and Mitch Wise led UCI with two goals apiece versus UCSD.
The Tritons jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, but the 'Eaters scored four unanswered goals in the second. Newland scored both of his goals in the period and Pfeil's goal with 2:31 remaining put UCI up 5-4 at halftime.
The game was tied at 6-6 entering the fourth quarter. Back-to-back goals by Hrlec and Wise gave the 'Eaters an 8-6 lead before UCSD's Josh Stiling scored with 2:30 remaining and Tommy Friedrich netted the equalizer with just one second left in regulation.
UCI took control in overtime as Jacob Mourer scored in the first three-minute extra session with Brian Pickford and Pfeil notching goals in the second three-minute period.
Alex Kazmier had six saves in goal for the 'Eaters.
Stiling and Luke Syka scored two goals each for the Tritons (0-2).
