Final Stats
LONDON, England --- UCI head coach and USA assistant coach Dan Klatt finally brought home the elusive gold medal that he and the women's water polo team have been after with an 8-5 win over Spain in the women's water polo final of the 2012 London Olympics in the Water Polo Arena.
A slow start to the match saw a 2-2 tie midway through the second period. Team USA opened up a sizable lead going into the half with three goals to make it 5-2. The U.S. continued to score in the second half leading by as much as 8-2 before running down the clock for the 8-5 victory.
The gold for the U.S. is its first ever gold medal in women's water polo. In the three previous years women's water polo has been represented in the Olympics, the Americans have brought home two silvers and a bronze. This is only the second water polo gold joining the 1904 men's squad.
This gold was also the first ever for coach Klatt who was a member of the 2004 men's water polo team that competed in the Athens Olympics, but did not medal. He will bring home the first gold medal for UCI water polo.
