DAVIS, Calif. --- The Anteaters won its fourth straight Big West title to earn its second straight NCAA Tournament berth and set a program record with its 24th win of the season with a 10-5 win over the host UC Davis Aggies.
Jessy Cardey scored twice in the first period to get UCI off to a 4-0 start. The Aggies would halt the run as the quarter ended making it 4-1.
Senior Katie Croghan would not be denied as she scored her second to open the second quarter. The 'Eaters (24-6, 5-0) would string together a few goals after UC Davis cut the lead back down to 6-2 capped by an Amy Riddering strike to make it 8-2 going into the half.
UC Irvine slowed the pace down in the third quarter. The clock ticked away as UCI was held scoreless and took an 8-4 lead into the fourth period.
Hillary Estrada took advantage early in the fourth with her second goal, and Jessy Cardey would close out the scoring with her fourth of the day as UCI would finish it off for the 10-5 win.
Cardey's four goals gave her seven for the weekend to earn her the Big West Tournament MVP, her second to go with her win as a freshman. Cardey leads the 'Eaters with 66 goals on the season.
Jillian Yocum and the defense stifled the Aggie attack as she collected five saves, and guided UCI to its 24th win of the season, a new Anteater record.
UCI extended its season to one more weekend as it awaits its first round opponent for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection show will be online at NCAA.com Monday, April 30th at 5:00 p.m.
