SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- An early offensive onslaught turned into a defensive slugfest as the No. 6 UCI Anteaters found a way past the No. 9 San Diego State Aztecs and into the UCSD Triton Invite Championship match.

The teams combined to score nine goals in the first period as SDSU (8-1) had the early 5-4 lead. Taelor Moreno scored twice for the Aztecs. Jessy Cardey (Riverside / Poly HS) and Katie Croghan (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS) each netted their second goals of the match in the second period to give UCI (8-1) the 7-6 advantage at the half.

A quiet third period went to SDSU who tied it up at 7-7. It would eventually take the lead early in the fourth, however, the 'Eaters tied it up quickly. Kelsey Klatt (Fresno / Sunnyside HS) scored with just under two minutes remaining to give UCI the lead.

The final minute of the match was hectic, however, as UCI was down two players after exclusions by Danielle Warde (Huntington Beach / Edison HS) and Michaela Pierandozzi (Whittier / La Serna HS), but the defense would lock down and prevent a goal giving UCI a huge 9-8 win against its soon-to-be conference mate.

The win propels the 'Eaters to 8-1 on the season and returns them to a date with the only school to hand them a loss thus far in the Arizona State Sun Devils for the UCSD Triton Invite Championship later today at 5:50 p.m.
