IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine opened up the UCSD Triton Invite with a 16-4 win over the Red Foxes from Marist College early Saturday morning on the campus of UC San Diego.
Marist (0-5) hung around early on trailing just 3-2 after one period. The ‘Eaters (6-1) would pull away with four goals in the second period including two by freshman Mary Jane O’Neill (Atherton / Menlo-Atherton HS).
UCI would outscore Marist 7-2 in the third period that included Hannah Croghan (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS), who scored twice. Her sister Katie Croghan (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS) would complete a hat trick in the fourth period to celebrate her birthday.
The ‘Eaters closed it out with four more in the fourth period while Kate Avetoom (Tustin / Foothill HS) kept the Foxes in check in the period. Jessy Cardey (Riverside / Poly HS) provided the 16th and final goal to complete her hat trick and keep her multiple-goal game streak alive at nine in a row.
UCI will await its opponent, the winner of Long Beach State and Maryland, and take them on at 2:40 p.m. today.
