Men's Soccer Sets Big West Sportsmanship Example

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer received a Big West Conference Fall Sportsmanship Award for 2012-13 fall season.

The Sportsmanship Award is voted upon by the respective student-athletes in each of the Big West's 16 championship sports. Each participating student-athlete selects the school that demonstrates excellent conduct in competition and is most deserving of the award. Winning teams are honored with commemorative t-shirts.

"These programs have exemplified the ideals of the Sportsmanship Award with excellent conduct in competition," said Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell. "Sportsmanship is taken very seriously by the conference as a representation of how we want our student-athletes to be viewed by others. It is a source of great pride to have those ideals fulfilled."

This is the fourth year that the Big West has bestowed the award on one school per sport. For UCI, it is its first such award in men's soccer and seventh overall. Men's and women's track and field each took home the award last year. Women's golf took home the award in 2010-11, and in 2009-10, women's soccer, women's volleyball and men's cross country claimed the prize along with women's track and field, the only two-time winner of an award for UCI.
