Marc Hunt Named to Interim Staff of USA Men's Senior National Team

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's water polo head coach Marc Hunt has been named lead assistant coach on the interim staff for the USA Men's Senior National Team, announced by USA Water Polo Tuesday.
Hunt will work with interim head coach Jovan Vavic (USC head coach) and Marko Pintaric (USC assistant coach) on the Team USA staff.
"It's an absolute honor to represent our country at the USA Men's Senior team level," Hunt said. "We have a challenging task at hand. I'm looking forward to working together with some very talented players and coaches."
The team selected by Vavic and his staff will represent the USA at the Union Americana de Natacion (UANA) World Championship Qualification Tournament in Calgary, Canada, Jan. 28-Feb. 2. The United States men did not qualify for the FINA 2013 World Championships at the London Olympic Games, and therefore must compete against teams from at least Canada and Brazil to gain a berth. The FINA World Championships are being held this summer in Barcelona, Spain.
After the qualification event, USA Water Polo will appoint a men's national team head coach and staff for the remainder of the Olympic quadrennial, who will start new training and selection for the upcoming FINA World League and World Championship events.
Hunt, a two-time UCI All-American, has been head coach of the Anteater men's water polo program for eight years. He has guided UCI to a top-five ranking in the final national poll five times in his eight seasons, including three straight from 2009-11, and 66 victories in the past four seasons.
Hunt was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2009.
He was head coach of the USA men's team that competed at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China, placing fourth. In April 2010, he was appointed head coach of the U.S. Men's Senior National B Team.
A two-time All-American as a player (1992, 1993) at UCI, Hunt was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's All-15th Anniversary team in 2007.
He was co-captain of the gold-medal winning USA team at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y., the last time the U.S. won a gold medal at the Games. He also played in the 1995 World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan, where the Americans placed seventh.
Hunt played for the U.S. National Team from 1993-96, and then competed for the Sydney (Australia) University Lions club team that finished third in the National League in 1999.
