DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine put up a fight but suffered a second sweep at the hands of UC Davis this season, falling 26-24, 25-20, 27-25 Friday at The Pavilion in Davis.
Marisa Bubica led all players with 16 kills while Aly Squires added a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Marissa Alvarez also posted a double-double, dishing out 39 assists and 10 digs in the effort. Taylor Smith chipped in seven kills to go along with three block assists while Kristin Winkler totaled 17 digs and an ace.
Smith and Shannon Fleming gave UCI a two-point lead at 10-8 following the block on Devon Damelio and would maintain the edge until Victoria Lee's killed tie the set at 15-15. Smith bookended a three-point rally with a kill and a block assist on Allison Whitson as UCI took a 19-16 advantage but the Aggies responded with a three-point run of their own to wrestle away a 22-21 edge. An attack error by the Anteaters gave Aggies set point at 24-23 but Bubica connected with Alvarez to knot the score. That would be all for the Anteaters as UC Davis went to Whitson on back-to-back plays to win the set.
UC Davis opened the second set with four straight points, forcing UCI to use its first timeout. The deficit extended to five at 13-8 but the Anteaters chipped at the lead to close the gap to one at 16-15 on a kill from Squires. Squires found Bubica for the kill to tie the score at 17-17 and it was Bubica again with the put-away to give UCI its first lead of the set at 18-17. Four answered points by UC Davis gave the Aggies a 21-18 lead and Damelio dished a ball to Valerie Brain as UCD took a two-set lead.
The third set proved to be a fierce battle. UCI built a 7-4 lead with three kills by Fleming highlighting the rally. The Aggies worked their way back into the frame to tie the score at 9-9 and the two teams traded points for 17 ties until at 20-20, Damelio and Quinn delivered on consecutive plays for a 22-20 Davis advantage. Following an Anteater timeout, Brain committed an unforced error and UCI would catch the Aggies at 24-24 on an error again by Brain. However, Brain and Bubica traded kills before Jenny Woolway would find Quinn for match point (26-25). Victoria Lee would end the match by sending back an attempt by Arielle Manz.
