THIS WEEKEND
● Coach Marc Hunt's UC Irvine squad (12-3), which moved up to No. 4 in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association national poll, faces Whittier College and Cal Lutheran Saturday in the Gary Troyer (formerly Convergence) Tournament.
● The 'Eaters face Whittier at 11:20 a.m. at Haldeman Pool in Claremont and Cal Lutheran at 3:20 p.m. at the La Verne Aquatic Center.
QUICK HITS
● UCI finished fourth in the SoCal Tournament at Santa Barbara last weekend. The 'Eaters opened with a 13-7 win over UC Davis before knocking off then-No. 4 California, 13-11, Saturday. On Sunday, UCI fell to top-ranked USC, 10-5, and to then-No. 2 UCLA, 14-8, in the third-place game.
● Junior Bojan Hrlec, who scored 11 goals in the SoCal Tournament, including four in the win over Cal, is tied for first in goals in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 43. He ranks third in the league with an average of 2.87 goals per game.
● Junior Mitch Wise, who has 36 goals on the season, ranks eighth in the MPSF at 2.40 goals per game.
● Senior Nick Pfeil has scored 24 goals this season with a high of four in the Sept. 1 win over Redlands.
● Sophomore Jacob Mourer scored six goals in the SoCal Tournament and has 21 goals, with a high of four in the season-opening victory over Chapman Sept. 1.
● Senior Winston Newland has scored 16 goals this year, including hat tricks in wins over Pacific and Occidental.
● Sophomore Alan Robertson also has a pair of hat tricks this season and has scored 14 goals.
● Redshirt freshman Chris Swieca has scored 13 goals this season with a high of two on four occasions, including the win over Cal.
● Junior goalie Alex Kazmier has 107 saves this season with a high of 17 in the Sept. 16 overtime win over UC Santa Barbara in the fifth-place game of the NorCal Tournament. He had 12 stops in the win over UC Davis last Saturday at the SoCal Tournament.
● Kazmier ranks fourth in the MPSF with an average of 10.19 saves per game.
● Redshirt sophomore goalie Dylan Peterson has recorded 37 saves this season.
● Sophomore Michael Bailey saw his first action of the season at the MPSF Tournament, recording 12 saves in three games.
MPSF OPENER ON HORIZON
● UCI opens MPSF action Saturday, Oct. 13 at Pepperdine in a game scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. in Malibu.
● The annual UCI Alumni Game is Saturday, Oct. 20 with a noon start.
● The MPSF home opener for the 'Eaters is Sunday, Oct. 21 versus UC Santa Barbara at noon. UCI will have played 15 consecutive games away from home prior to that contest.
