LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The No. 4 UCLA Bruins were too much for the newly-anointed No. 55 Anteaters in a 7-0 defeat Wednesday afternoon, but Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) and Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College William & Mary) didn't leave Los Angeles Tennis Center empty-handed.
UCLA (1-0) jumped on top early with an 8-2 win in doubles from No. 12-ranked Anderson/Morton over Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS). Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep HS) and Hannah Holladay (La Jolla / La Jolla HS) also struggled in the No. 1 slot to No. 23-ranked Dolehide/Montez, 8-3, to lose the doubles points. Ali Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) / Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) had a little more success against Jones/Van Nguyen in the No. 3 slot. They trailed by one point throughout the match until Jones/Van Nguyen pulled away for the 8-5 win and a sweep of UC Irvine (1-2).
Singles started slow for the 'Eaters. Goettsching fell, 6-0, to No. 70 Pamela Montez. Brooke Schweyer (Palos Verdes Estates / Palos Verdes HS) and Smith each fell 6-1 to No. 112 Kaitlin Ray and No. 8 Robin Anderson, respectively. The newcomers, Kat Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) and Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College of William & Mary) put up first set fights. Mamiit made a late surge against Chanelle Van Nguyen in the six-slot, but fell 6-3. Facey hung around with Skylar Morton, but ultimately dropped the set, 6-4.
The second sets went a little better. Byron started 4-3 after falling 6-2 in the first set. Smith and Goettsching each were up 3-2 after five points. Schweyer couldn't keep her good play from USC going dropping the second set as well, 6-1. Facey and Mamiit also returned in the second set on a hot start. Facey held an early 2-1 lead with Mamiit all knotted up after two points. Byron lost the lead, but wouldn't go away that easily against the No. 62 player in the country. She would eventually fall, 6-4. Goettsching lost her lead and the set, 6-4. Smith opened up a 5-3 lead, but No. 8-ranked Robin Anderson charged back for the 6-5 set lead. Facey lost the final five points in her second set loss, 6-2, but Mamiit powered through with a 6-1 win to send it to a third set. Smith managed to tie it back up at six all, but Anderson pulled out the 7-6 win. Mamiit would finish up with a quick third set en route to UCLA's seventh point.
The 'Eaters take a little time off before they return to the court. Following a nine-day layoff, UCI will pick up the action again Sat. Feb. 4th with the first of four straight home matches against BYU at 11:00 a.m.
