Irvine, Calif. – Seattle University shot 55 percent from the field and defeated UC Irvine, 86-58 in a non-conference game at the Bren Center Sunday in front of a season-high crowd of 1,300 fans.
UCI goes to 9-11 overall and snaps a five game-winning streak. Seattle University improves to 12-8 on the year.
UCI freshman forward Methlyn Onogomuho led the Anteaters with 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Kassandra McCalister hit three three-pointers and ended with 13 points and four assists. Junior guard Anete Klintsone added 10 points, four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Jacquelyn Marshall totaled eight points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Sophomore forward Lauren Spinazee was 2-2 from three-point range, recording six points and three rebounds in nine minutes of action. Sophomore forward Jasmine Bernard had three points and five rebounds and junior forward Cheyenne Cathey added two points and two rebounds.
The Anteaters shot 34.4 percent (22-64) from the floor, while the Redhawks were red hot, shooting 33-60 from the floor. Seattle University dished 25 assists and led the Anteaters on the boards, 41-32. UCI hit seven three-pointers, while Seattle U. had six.
The Redhawks were led by Ashley Ward with a game-high 20 points, going 6-12 from the floor. Kacie Sowell recorded 15 points on 6-7 shooting from the field and had seven rebounds, while Talisa Rhea totaled 13 points and nine assists and Daidra Brown had 11 points. Brenda Adhiambo came off the bench to grab a game-high eight rebounds to go with nine points.
Seattle went on a 12-0 run to break the game open with a 35-18 lead at 4:23 in the first half. The Redhawks shot 54.5 percent (18-33) in the first 20 minutes and led 43-25 at the half. Seattle U. would score the first two points of the second half on a jumper by Kacie Sowell and never dip under a 20-point advantage the rest of the game.
The Anteaters, who are tied for first place in the Big West with a 5-2 record, return to conference action hosting UC Riverside Thursday (Jan. 26) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Center. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3.
