IRVINE, Calif. --- David Hanson had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Will Taylor also scored 16 points to lead Cal Poly past UC Irvine, 66-50, in a Big West Conference game at the Bren Center Thursday night.
Hanson was 6 of 10 from the floor and Taylor 8 of 13. Chris Eversley added 11 points and eight rebounds for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs (11-6, 2-2 Big West) broke away from a 24-24 halftime tie, outscoring the Anteaters 42-26 in the final 20 minutes. Taylor scored the first basket of the second half and Cal Poly led the remainder of the game.
Derick Flowers hit a three to pull UCI within 43-39 with 10:58 remaining before the Mustangs went on an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes to pull away.
Daman Starring led UCI (6-11, 3-2) with 15 points, hitting 7 of 14 from the field, and added nine rebounds. Will Davis II scored 13 points, connecting on 6 of 11 shots.
Flowers scored nine points for the 'Eaters, hitting 3 of 6 threes, and had five assists. Chris McNealy added six rebounds and three assists.
The 'Eaters had seven blocked shots, led by Mike Best with three.
The Mustangs, who committed just seven turnovers, outrebounded the Anteaters, 43-34. Cal Poly shot 42.6 percent from the field and UCI 36.2 percent.
The 'Eaters, who had 10 turnovers, were 2 of 4 from the free-throw line and Cal Poly hit 8 of 12.
Cal Poly was physically strong, mentally strong and imposed their will on us, which was disappointing," UCI head coach Russell Turner said.
"They were the aggressors, especially in the second half when they made the plays and we didn't make enough of them."
UCI travels to UC Santa Barbara for a Big West game Saturday night at 7:00. The 'Eaters then have five straight home games beginning with Cal State Fullerton Jan. 21.
