Axelrod Tames Tigers in Major League Start But Comes Away With No-Decision as Detroit Rallies Late
September 14, 2011 | Baseball
CHICAGO, Ill.--- UC Irvine alumnus Dylan Axelrod made his first major league start on the mound for the Chicago White Sox and held a hot Detroit team to two runs on six hits while striking out eight but came away with a no-decision as the Tigers posted a 10-inning, 6-5 win.
Axelrod faced 26 batters, walked just two and hurled 93 pitches, 61 for strikes. He gave up a solo home run to Carlos Guillen in the second but was staked to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double from Alexei Ramirez and a two-RBI single from Paul Konerko. Axelrod then held the Tigers scoreless until the sixth, when he yielded a run-scoring single to Victor Martinez.
Axelrod left the mound with a 5-2 lead after six only to watch the Tigers rally for two runs against White Sox reliever Chris Sale and then come up with the game-tying run against Sergio Santos, all in the ninth inning. The Tigers posted their 12th straight victory after scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th.
Axelrod, making the start in place of Jake Peavy, struck out Delmon Young twice and Miguel Cabrera and Martinez once. He faced Brad Penny, who pitched six innings and gave up five runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out three and walking three.
Axelrod became the first 'Eater to start a major league game on the mound since Doug Linton (1984-86) started eight games for the Baltimore Orioles in 1999.
