SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Aly Squires and Mary Carls put together strong all-around efforts in UC Irvine's 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 27-25, 25-18) win over Nevada on the second day of the Aztec Invitational.
Squires, who had posted 23 kills in the win yesterday, totaled 21 kills today to go along with 17 digs, five blocks and four aces. Setter Mary Carls also added a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs while posting a pair of service aces. Marisa Bubica put away 11 kills, committing just two errors in 24 tries to hit .375, and Alexandra Hauser fired four aces as UCI edged the Wolf Pack 11-7 from the baseline.
Bubica led UCI in the first set, hitting .429 as the Anteaters (1-1) cruised to a 25-13 win to open the match. UCI scored five straight to kick off the frame with Hauser firing three aces in the rally. Nevada trimmed the lead to three (6-3) on consecutive kills by Erin Garvey but a Wolf Pack service error followed by a kill from Bubica, widened the margin to five at 11-6. Leading 12-8, UCI out-scored Nevada 8-2 to take an insurmountable 20-10 lead. Squires' kill gave UCI set point and a Janelle Batista's service error would end the frame.
Bubica and Squires combined for five kills as UCI jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second frame. Nevada would combine an attack error by the Anteaters with a service ace by Tatiana Santiago to trim the lead to one at 9-8 but consecutive errors by hitters Garvey and Tessa Lea'ea re-opened the UCI lead to four at 12-8. The Anteaters maintained a lead for most of the match until at 22-17, Nevada rallied for five straight points, capping the run with a service ace by Grace Anxo and tying the score at 22-22. Nevada took its first lead of the set on a kill by Batista to put the Wolf Pack ahead 24-23 and Santiago tied the match at a set apiece with the kill on set point.
The teams battled early in the third set and Nevada would be the first to take a substantial lead at 15-11 as the Wolf Pack delivered back-to-back blocks and received another ace from Anxo. However, trailing 16-13, the Anteaters mounted a 6-1 run to take a 19-17 edge on Elissa Ji's attack error for Nevada. Carls would find Squires on consecutive plays as the Anteaters would go on to win 27-25 to take a one-set lead.
Nevada opened the final set with three straight points and would hold on to the lead. However, at 12-10, UCI reeled off nine straight points, riding the arm of Squires, who had four kills and added a block assist with Arielle Manz in the run. The Wolf Pack chipped at the Anteater lead but would get no closer than five points. Pauline Acres connected with Shaina Olsen to give UCI match point and Anxo's attack error on the ensuing play sealed the win for the Anteaters.
UCI takes on Portland tonight at 5:00 p.m. to conclude the Aztec Invitational.
