IRVINE, Calif. --- Pete Fernandez, who will be a redshirt freshman on the UC Irvine men's golf team, won the title of the Irvine City Championship that concluded Sunday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club.
Fernandez, a Bakersfield High graduate, won the tournament by four shots as Aaron Levine and Rick Owaki tied for second at 139.
Fernandez shot a 5-under par 66 in Sunday's final round to finish the two-day event with a tournament-record total of 7-under 135. He opened with a 69 on Saturday. His 66 is just one shot shy of his career-low tournament round of 65.
"It was a fun tournament to compete in and I got the chance to play with some very good golfers, including Scott Travers, who just graduated from Santa Clara University," Fernandez said. "I was able to learn some things from such an experienced and talented player like him.
"I have played in just a few tournaments since returning from an injury, so this was a pretty big win for me. I am most excited about the fact that I was able to shoot a low score and finish strong in the final round," Fernandez added.
