Anteaters Lose to Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Aly Squires and Shaina Olsen each put away 14 kills apiece but the Anteaters were unable to get past Cal State Fullerton, falling 25-21, 25-18, 27-29, 25-19 in Big West action Friday at Titan Gym.
Kristin Winkler led all players with 27 digs while Squires picked up 21. Shannon Fleming connected on nine of 23 attempts for a .304 clip while Arielle Manz led the effort at the net with four block assists. Marissa Alvarez led the team with 34 assists.
Fullerton sped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set only to see the Anteaters cut the lead to two at 12-10 on an attack error by Leah Maurer. The Titans then committed three unforced errors as UCI claimed a 15-14 edge. At 18-18, a kill by Bre Moreland was followed by a bad set by the Anteaters and Maurer's solo block would put the Titans ahead by three at 21-18. CSF reeled off another three consecutive points to reach set point and a bad set by UCI would close the frame.
UCI kept game two close but at 11-10, the Titans reeled off eight unanswered points to take a 19-10 advantage. The Anteaters shaved the lead to six at 20-14 but a UCI attack error closed out the second set.
It was Fullerton again to take the early edge but the Anteaters battled to pull away from a 12-12 tie and lead 15-12, sparked by back-to-back kill from Squires. The Titans tied the match at 16-16 on a kill from Maurer but UCI wrestled the lead back to two at 20-18. CSF caught UCI again at 21-21 and the two teams would trade points until at 27-27, Alvarez found Taylor Smith for one of her seven kills. Alexandra Hauser then aced Bre Moreland to give UCI the win in set three.
CSF took early control of the final set, out-scoring UCI 8-1 to pull away from a slim 10-8 margin and take hold of an 18-9 advantage. The Anteaters came as close as five points on a Titan miscue but CSF closed the match with a kill from Maurer.
UCI concludes Big West action Saturday at Long Beach State.
