UCI DROPS TWO ON THE ROAD: UCI lost its first two games of the season, falling to Portland State, 80-76 and Portland 64-56 on the road.
Against Portland State, UCI watched the Vikings go on a 19-3 run to take a 72-66 lead with 4:29 left. PSU would continue to lead 76-72 with 1:29 to go before Pernilla Hanson would drain a pair of free throws (1:22) and Methlyn Onogomuho hit a basket to tie the game at 76-76 with 15 seconds remaining. The Vikings would hit a pair of free-throws with 11 seconds remaining to put Portland State ahead. Anete Klintsone drove the ball up the court and drew contact driving down the lane, but was called for traveling forcing the Anteaters to foul with two seconds to go. PSU would hit two more free throws to end the scoring.
Sophomore Jasmine Bernard led UCI with a career-high 21 points on 9-11 shooting from the field. Freshman Methlyn Onogomuho was 7-9 from the floor and ended with 16 points.
It was a second half of runs that determined the Pilots victory Sunday. UCI went on a 7-0 streak that included a three-pointer by Jacqueline Marshall, a pair of free throws by Jazmyne White and a basket by Onogomuho to tie the score at 47 all with 7:53. Portland would then go on the next run, 8-2, to put the Pilots up 55-49 with 5:48 to play. A layup by Cheyenne Cathey at 3:37 narrowed Portland's lead to 57-53, but UCI would struggle on offense and the Pilots would score the next seven points, all free throws, to go ahead 64-53 with seven seconds remaining. Klintsone would hit a three-pointer as time expired for the final score.
Klintsone and Marshall led the Anteaters with 14 points a piece.
