ANTEATERS WRAP UP BIG WEST ACTION: UC Irvine (10-16, 4-10 Big West) concludes the Big West schedule this week at Cal State Fullerton Friday (Nov. 18) and at 23rd-ranked Long Beach State Saturday (Nov. 19). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
SQUIRES LEADS THE WAY: Aly Squires (Santa Ynez/Santa Ynez Valley Union HS) was the lone Anteater in double-figure kills in two matches last week as the outside hitter totaled 29 kills and 17 digs. Squires tops UCI in kills with 334 and a 3.48 average and is second in digs with 298.
FOUR OF A KIND FOR WINKLER: Kristin Winkler (Los Altos/St. Francis HS) tied a career-high with four aces against Cal State Northridge. The junior libero fired four aces as a freshman against Montana to set a personal best. Winkler is currently second on the team with 21 aces and a .21 average.
TEAM NOTES
UCI has recorded at least five aces in the last three matches.
The team has recorded double-figure blocks in eight consecutive matches and has reached a season-best 26 block assists twice.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Aly Squires amassed 29 kills and 17 digs in two matches last week.
o Led the team with 15 kills against UC Riverside.
o Hit .400 in the match against the Highlanders to tie a season-high
o Fell shy of double-doubles in both matches last week and snapped a six-match streak of double-digit digs.
o Ranked seventh in the Big West in kills at 3.48
Kristin Winkler picked up 40 digs in two matches.
o Had 23 digs against the Matadors
o Tied a career-high with four aces
o Is the second Anteater to reached 1500 career digs
o Ranked second in the Big West in digs at 5.21 and 10th in aces at 0.21
Shaina Olsen posted 17 kills to go with 15 digs and five blocks last week.
o Second on the team in kills a 209 and a 2.55 average
o Tied a season-high with two aces against the Highlanders
o Has at least one block assist and at least one solo block in last three matches
Mary Carls dealt out 39 assists and had 19 digs.
o Ninth in the Big West in assist average at 7.39
o Leads the team with 709 assists
o Third on the team with 204 digs
o Fifteen digs against Cal State Northridge was third-best effort for sophomore setter
Marissa Alvarez had 33 assists and nine digs in two matches.
o Handed out 20 assists against UC Riverside
o Has four matches of 20 or more assists
Shannon Fleming posted 12 kills and five digs last week.
o Sixth in the Big West in blocking at 1.05
o Leads the team with 96 total blocks
o Currently tied for ninth in the UCI single-season records with 93 block assists
o Needs six block assists to move into the No. 8 spot
Arielle Manz put away 14 kills and had six blocks for the team.
o Has logged at least two block assists in four straight matches
o Totaled seven kills against both the Highlanders and the Matadors
Alexandra Hauser had four kills hitting as an outside hitter against CSUN.
o Second in the Big West in ace average at 0.35.
o Had a nine-match streak of at least one block assist snapped against UC Riverside
o Rebounded with three blocks against the Matadors
SERIES RECORDS: UC Irvine dropped to Cal State Fullerton 3-1 earlier this season but leads the Titans 41-25 in the series records. The Titans have won three straight against UCI. The Anteaters were swept by Long Beach State in early October and trail the Beach 61-8 in the series.
