Rain-Shortened Fall Classic Provides Ups and Downs for 'Eaters

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UCI didn't quite get to finish what they started thanks to a wash on Saturday from rainy conditions, but the 'Eaters made the most of their time on the court.

Hannah Holladay and Franziska Goettsching started off the fall classic right with a pair of wins in doubles, 8-4 over Denver's Bergner/Najera and 8-3 of USD's Sujica/Brown.

Kat Facey and Anna Tatsuno followed suit with an 8-4 win over Sablina/Kuuttila of New Mexico and continued their run with an 8-5 victory over Parrav/Anderson from LMU.

The duos of Brooke Schweyer / Ali Facey and Marivick Mamiit / Nakisa Vahdat went one for two in their matches. Schweyer/Facey defeated Dake/Hueffner (AFA) 9-7 before falling, 9-8 (6), to Cioffi/Antonana-Iriarte of SDSU. Mamiit/Vahdat dropped their opening match, 8-2, to Tran/Molina of Air Force, but came back with an 8-4 win over Pironkova/Finnell from LMU.

In singles action, Mamiit won 1-6,6-4,6-4 over Bezdickova of New Mexico in her opening match. She followed with a 6-3,6-3 win over Hedberg of Eastern Washington.

After an impressive doubles run, Holladay and Goettsching struggled in singles. Holladay fell to Hedberg, 6-1,6-4. Goettsching slipped to Cioffi of SDSU, 6-4,7-5.

Tatsuno was also unable to keep her doubles rhythm going as she dropped a pair of match; 6-0,6-0 to Aguilar (SDSU) and 7-5,6-2 to Eggleston (UNM).

Vahdat scored a 6-2,6-1 victory over Hueffner of Air Force after falling in her opening singles match, 6-3,6-3, to Ellison of San Diego State.

Ali Facey provided the drama over the weekend. After a 6-3,6-0 win over Sablina of New Mexico, she battled with Cecil of Air Force winning 6-7,7-6,15-13.

The final rounds of the tournament were never settled as UCI rounds out its fall schedule.
