November 01, 2011 | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- UC Irvine scored a big win in its final regular season match beating Cal Poly (6-8-3, 3-5-1), 1-0, to earn a spot in the Big West Tournament.
Miguel Ibarra (Lancaster / Taft College) broke up the scoreless tie in the 56th minute as he beat the keeper on a pass from Christian Hernandez (Palmdale / Taft College).
Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) came up with some big saves late in the match. His five saves earned the senior keeper another shutout making eight this season and 28 in his career.
UCI (14-5-1, 6-3-1) matched its win total from last season and finish up Big West play at 6-3-1 and 19 points. The win also guarantees the Anteaters home-field advantage for the semifinal match of the Big West Tournament that will be played Wed. Nov. 9th at 7:00 p.m.
Their opponent is still to be determined. It will come from the pool of UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, and UC Riverside who all also secured a spot in the tournament tonight. UCI can capture the regular season title depending on how UC Davis fares in their final two matches. A loss in either of their matches will give UCI the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
