
Pan Am Gold for Team USA, UC Irvine alums

GUADALAJARA, Mexico --- UC Irvine alums Jeff Powers and Tim Hutten each scored fourth-quarter goals as Team USA defeated Canada, 7-3, in the Gold Medal contest at the Pan American Games Saturday in Guadalajara.
With the victory, the U.S. earned a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.
Hutten converted a power-play goal with 4:16 left in the final quarter for a 6-2 lead and Powers scored with 2:34 remaining for a 7-2 margin.
UCI alum Ryan Bailey did not score on two shot attempts Saturday.
Powers scored a total of 11 goals at the Pan Am Games, Hutten nine and Bailey eight.
Bailey has played on the last three U.S. Olympic teams, Powers the past two and Hutten was on the 2008 squad. The three alums each earned multiple All-America honors while competing for the `Eaters.
Hutten was the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award given annually to the top player in the NCAA.
