LAGOS DE MORENO, Mexico -- Team USA lost the Pan Am baseball gold medal final in heart-breaking fashion, Tuesday, falling 2-1 to Canada. With the loss, the U.S. dropped to 3-2 for the tournament and 10-6 overall for the season (including the IBAF Baseball World Cup in Panama).
Tuesday marked the fourth-consecutive Pan Am silver medal for the United States and its 10th Pan Am silver overall. The defeat also extended the second-longest gold medal drought in U.S. Pan American sports history, with men's field hockey having never won a gold medal, dating back to 1967.
U.S. starter Andy Van Hekken delivered another solid start for Team USA. The lefty allowed both Canada runs, along with six hits over seven innings. The loss dropped Van Hekken to 1-1 for the Pan Ams and 3-1 on the season. Jeff Beliveau and Pete Andrelczyk chipped in a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively, in relief.
Brett Carroll drove in the lone U.S. run in the first with an RBI-double. It was Carroll's eighth RBI of the tournament, and in going 1-for-4, he finished team-leading .556 (10-for-18) average in the Pan Ams. A.J. Pollock led the club with two base hits Tuesday.
U.S. manager Ernie Young -- a five-time USA Baseball alum, two as a player and now three as a member of a coaching staff -- said that he could not have been prouder of his team following the game.
"Our guys played their hearts out," Young said. "I wanted so bad for those guys to win a gold medal. We just came up one run short. I'm proud of them. They came a long way. We didn't play well in Panama at first, but we got better and carried it over to the Pan Ams. We lost two games here -- both by one run. They were great ball games."
