Drawing First Blood
October 26, 2011 | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge fought valiantly on a chilly Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field as the defenses stole the spotlight in the 0-0 draw.
UC Irvine (13-4-1, 5-2-1) had their hands full late in the match as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (7-7-2, 3-3-1) possessed the ball for most of the second half continuously creating chances. Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) and the sterling Anteater defense warded off the Matadors' constant advances to produce their seventh shutout of the season.
UCI had plenty of offensive chances firing three of their shots on goal in the first half. They equalled that in the second half totalling six shots on goal while the CSUN managed to put just two of their 17 shots on net.
The draw gave UCI one point which was good enough for the 'Eaters to give them sole possession of first place in the Big West with 16 points narrowly edging UC Davis whose loss left them at 15 points.
The 'Eaters have two more matches in the regular season as they look to lock up a Big West Tournament berth. Their final home match is Sat. Oct. 29th at 7:00 p.m. as the eight seniors will be honored before they play UC Riverside. Their final match will come Tue. Nov. 1st at Cal Poly.
