Fontein Flies First-Class
October 10, 2011 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- Coming off being named a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, senior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) added another Big West Defensive Player of the Week award to his resume.
Fontein put up two dominating performances last week against conference rivals, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge. He stopped 15 of 16 shots with the only goal allowed coming off an own-goal deflection. His 11-save effort against Cal State Northridge was a career-best for the senior and his first double-digit save match as an Anteater.
In his career, Fontein has accumulated many UCI soccer records including 45 wins, 25 shutouts, 64 matches, and 6,032 minutes played. His goals-against-average is currently tops among Anteaters, as well.
For Fontein, it is his fourth overall award and second this season. It's the fifth for the Anteaters as a team joining Enrique Cardenas (Coachella / Coachella Valley HS) and two from Christian Hernandez (Palmdale / Taft College).
Fontein is up for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award which honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring.
Fans can vote at seniorCLASSaward.com or the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Facebook page until November 14th.
In addition to the Big West award, Jimmy Turner (Mission Viejo / Mission Viejo HS) was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week.
Fontein, Turner, and the Anteaters will begin a hard-nosed week with a pair of road matchups at UC Riverside (Wed. Oct. 12, 7:00 p.m.) and at Creighton (Sat. Oct. 15, 5:30 p.m.).
