Irvine, Calif. -- Drean Bolivar topped UC Irvine, 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22) at the Irvine International Volleyball Tournament presented by ST/COMP Quiksilver at Crawford Court.
The Anteaters, who do not play tomorrow, end pool play with a 1-2 record and will play at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The Anteaters will play either Quiksilver or Shanghai which will be determined following Thursday's results.
UCI took a 16-14 lead in the first set on a block by Carson Clark and Dan McDonnell, but watched Argentina score four in a row to take a 18-16 advantage. Drean Bolivar continued to lead 24-22 before they committed two hitting errors to let UCI back into the set, 24-24. Argentina responded with a pair of kills from the middle to end the set, 26-24.
Setter Chris Austin made an impact on his first play as an Anteater with a solo block, which was part of a 5-0 run to give UCI a 10-5 lead in the second set. Two kills by Drean Bolivar and two UCI hitting errors erased UCI's lead and knotted the score at 12-12. Argentina held the 22-20 advantage before a Clark kill was followed by a triple block by Austin D'Amore, Daniel Stork and Kevin Carroll to tie the set at 22 all. Tied at 23-23 another block by D'Amore and Stork was followed by a joust won by Stork to give UCI the 25-23 victory.
In the third set, Argentina had a kill and service ace to take a 21-19 lead and never trailed again as they won the game, 25-21.
Drean Bolivar (2-0) used a UCI hitting error, a kill and a block to break a 21-21 tie in the fourth set and opened a 24-21 lead. They would win the set 25-22 and the match, 3-1.
