Matt Seawright begins his third year as an assistant throws coach at UC Irvine.
In 2019, Seawright helped lead the Anteater women to a Big West-leading 41 points at the conference championships. Barbara Coward accounted for nearly half of those points as she claimed the Big West title in the discus and hammer. Brianna Villanueval also finished third in both events, while Elizabeth Akindele was the runner-up in the shot put. The men's throwers also racked up 13 points, with Jack Pickard (Javelin) and Kyle Tsu (Shot Put) earning all-conference honors.
In Seawright's two seasons on staff, the UCI throws squad has combined for 10 All-Big West performances, three individual conference titles and eight NCAA West Preliminary qualifying marks.
Seawright was a member of the UC Irvine track & field team in 2016 and 2017. He was a three-time All-Big West performer and two-time NCAA West Prelim qualifier in both the hammer and discus. At the 2017 conference championships, he established a personal-record 210-11 to claim runner-up honors in the hammer throw, while he also placed third in the discus with a season-best 180-07.
Seawright concluded his career ranked among UCI’s all-time top-10 in the hammer (3rd, 210-11), discus (4th, 180-07) and shot put (9th, 54-06).
Seawright joined the 'Eaters after spending two years at Cerritos College where he was a state finalist in the hammer (5th), shot put (9th) and discus (10th). He was named the Falcons’ Thrower of the Year in 2014 and 2015. He prepped at Millikan High School in Long Beach.
