2020 Tokyo Olympics Updates

July 23
Students Phillip and Ryan Chew began their U.S. Olympic group play against China falling in straight sets, 2-0. After falling 21-9 in the opening set, the Chews returned in set two making it competitive, 21-17.

U.S. women's water polo coached by Dan Klatt with UCI assistants Melissa Seidemann, Alys Williams, Jaime Neushul, and Kaleigh Gilchrist began Olympic group play against host Japan with a win, 25-4. Each player earned at least 15 minutes of play time with goals coming from Seidemann with one and two from Gilchrist.

July 24
In men's volleyball, the U.S. with David Smith and coach Brian Thornton took on France with Kevin Tillie. The U.S. took the match winning 3-0. Each player started all three sets with Tillie earning two points on kills and Smith earning eight points on seven kills and one block.

South Africa began men's water polo group play against Italy losing, 21-2. Jason Evezard was in the starting lineup for the RSA. Evezard missed on his one shot, but led the team in play time with 24:30.

U.S. women's volleyball with Michelle Bartsch-Hackley won their Olympic opener in group play, 3-0, over Argentina. Bartsch-Hackley earned starts in all three sets earning 13 points from 11 kills and two service aces.

July 25
Lovre Milos and the Croatian men's water polo team began their Olympic group play with a 23-7 victory over Kazakhstan. Milos came off the bench to play 19 minutes and score one goal for Croatia.

Women's beach volleyball began group play, and the duo of Sarah Sponcil / Kelly Claes played its first match for the U.S. The duo is coached by UCI assistant coach Jorden Cheng. They came back from down to win in three sets over their Latvian counterparts, 2-1.

Group play continues for Phillip and Ryan Chew of the U.S. in badminton falling to Japan, 2-0, and eliminating them from advancing to the knockout rounds. The brothers lost their sets 21-11 and 21-3. Final group play match July 27 against Germany.

U.S. men's volleyball lost its second match in Olympic pool play, 3-1, to the Russian Olympic Committee. David Smith started played three of four sets and picking up six points, five from kills and one block.

In a tightly-contested match for the U.S. women's water polo team coached by Dan Klatt, the team broke a halftime tie to defeat China, 12-7, in its second match of pool play. Seidemann, Gilchrist, and Williams each scored once

July 26
France men's volleyball scored a straight-set win over Tunisia, 3-0. Kevin Tillie came off the bench in two sets to serve.

Jason Evezard and South Africa men's water polo fell to the United States, 20-3. Evezard started and scored once in 25 minutes of play.

The top-ranked U.S. women's volleyball squad with Michelle Bartsch-Hackley topped the second-ranked China team in a 3-0 sweep. Bartsch-Hackley started all three sets scoring 15 points on kills.

July 27
Phillip and Ryan Chew of U.S. men's badminton men's doubles played their final group play match falling to Germany, 2-0, in sets of 21-10 and 21-16.

Croatia men's water polo played against Australia losing, 11-8. Lovre Milos came off the bench to play 14 minutes, but did not contribute any goals

46-year-old Amber Neben rode for the U.S. Cycling team in the Road Race Time Trial event. Neben's made her highest finish in her third Olympics placing fifth with a time of 31:26.13, the highest American. Neben finished 1:13 off the leader and 11 seconds from the podium.

David Smith, Brian Thornton, and U.S. men's volleyball went to 2-1 in their pool play defeating Tunisia, 3-1. Smith started the first two sets scoring four points from three kills and a service ace.

U.S. women's water polo under coach Klatt dropped its pool play match, 10-9, to Hungary. Melissa Seidemann scored once while Alys Williams and Kaleigh Gilchrist each saw action as well with Williams playing over 23 minutes.

July 28
France men's volleyball fought through five sets losing to Argentina, 3-2. France took sets 1 and 4. Kevin Tillie came off the bench in two matches to play, but did not record a point.

Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil played another group play match for U.S. women's beach volleyball under coach Jordan Cheng. This time a sweep of Kenya winning sets 21-8 and 21-6.

South Africa men's water polo continued with Jason Evezard. He did not record a goal playing 19 minutes off the bench.

Lovre Milos and Croatia men's water polo took a group play victory off of Montenegro, 13-8. Milos started and scored the match's opening goal for his only tally along with a steal and wins in his two sprints.

July 29
Michelle Bartsch-Hackley and U.S. women's volleyball won the first two sets of their pool play match and held off a charging Turkey team to win in five, 3-2. Bartsch-Hackley started four sets putting up six points on kills and five digs.

David Smith and U.S. men's volleyball fell to Brazil, 3-1. Smith came off the bench in two sets, and earned kills on both of his attempts in the match.

U.S. women's water polo under coach Klatt bounced back for an 18-5 win over the ROC. Williams, Neushul, and Gilchrist all scored once with Williams and Seidemann each playing 17 minutes. The win also secured a position in the knockout stage for the U.S. Opponent and time have yet to be determined, but will begin August 2.

July 30
France men's volleyball picked up a big win over the ROC, 3-1, breaking a 1-1 tie to win the final two sets. Kevin Tillie did not play in the match.

Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil picked up another coming from a set down to defeat the Brazilian duo, 2-1, to help win their pool for the U.S. under coach Jordan Cheng. The pair will begin knockout rounds August 1

U.S. women's volleyball were swept by the ROC, 3-0. Michelle Bartsch-Hackley started two sets earning four points on kills. Despite the result, the U.S. advanced into the knockout rounds. The squad has one more pool play match against group leader Italy before knockout play begins August 4.

Lovre Milos played 19 minutes in Croatia men's water polo's 14-12 victory over Serbia to secure a place in the knockout rounds. Croatia still has one pool play match remaining against the group leader, Spain.

July 31
Jason Evezard led South Africa men's water polo in minutes with 25 in a 28-5 loss to Greece. Evezard scored once, won his only sprint, and added a blocked shot. Evezard and South Africa have one more pool play match remaining against host Japan.

U.S. women's beach volleyball duo Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil coached by Jordan Cheng were upset in their opening round knockout match by Canada, 2-1. The team's Olympic run ends in the Round of 16.

Kevin Tillie and the France men's volleyball team fell in an epic, five-set match to Brazil to finish pool play, 3-2. The match included a 39-37 set win for France in set two, and a fifth set that saw Brazil win, 20-18. With the result, France has advanced into the knockout stage and will matchup with Poland August 3 at 5:30 am PDT.

August 1
U.S. men's volleyball were swept in the final match of pool play, 3-0, to Argentina knocking them out from the Olympic tournament. David Smith entered as a sub in the third set earning two points on kills from three attempts.

U.S. women's volleyball fought with Italy for five sets winning, 3-2, after losses in sets one and three. Michelle Bartsch-Hackley played a complete match with 12 kills, two blocks, two aces, and 12 digs. The team awaits its opponent and time for its quarterfinal match.

Croatia men's water polo finished off pool play against Spain falling, 8-4. Milos played 21 minutes as a starter. Croatia draws Hungary in the quarterfinals playing at 3:50 a.m. PDT on August 4.

August 2
Jason Evezard and South Africa men's water polo finishes up their Olympic Tournament with a 24-9 loss to host, Japan. Evezard started and played 19 minutes. He finishes his tournament started four of five matches scoring two goals.

U.S. women's water polo won its quarterfinal match against Canada, 16-5. Williams scored three times, Gilchrist scored once, and Seidemann played 12 minutes at center for the squad. Coach Klatt and the U.S. prepare for their semifinal match on August 5, 3:50 a.m. PDT against the winner of Australia vs. the ROC.

August 3
France men's volleyball fought to force a fifth set in their quarterfinal match against Poland and came away with a 3-2 victory. The win advances them to the semifinals against Argentina on August 5 at 5:00 a.m. PDT. Kevin Tillie entered off the bench in two sets to serve.

Michelle Bartsch-Hackley and U.S. women's volleyball swept the Dominican Republic, 25-11, 25-20, 25-19, in their quarterfinal match. Bartsch-Hackley scored 13 points on 12 kills and a block. The U.S. awaits their semifinal opponent which will take place August 6 at 5:00 a.m. PDT.

August 4
Lovre Milos and Croatia men's water polo fell in their quarterfinal match with Hungary, 15-11. Milos scored once in 14 minutes of play. Croatia will continue in the consolation bracket against Montenegro, August 5 at 10:00 p.m. PDT in pursuit of fifth place.

U.S. women's water polo advanced to the Gold Medal match coming back from a halftime deficit to defeat the ROC, 15-11. Melissa Seidemann and Alys Williams each scored a goal with Kaleigh Gilchrist playing 10 minutes. Coach Klatt and the Americans will play for Gold August 7 at 12:30 a.m. PDT against Spain. Coach Klatt and the squad are guaranteed a medal, but are vying for their third consecutive Gold.

August 5
Kevin Tillie and France men's volleyball swept Argentina, 3-0, to advance to the Gold Medal match August 7 at 5:15 a.m. PDT where France will take on the ROC. The squad has never finished better than eighth, but is guaranteed a medal and will look to win Gold.

U.S. women's volleyball earned a spot in the Gold Medal match with a 3-0 sweep of Serbia. Michelle Bartsch-Hackley started all three sets putting up nine points from seven kills and two blocks adding eight digs. The Gold Medal match will be against Brazil on August 7 at 9:30 p.m. PDT.

Croatia men's water polo won their first consolation match over Montenegro, 12-10, to earn a chance to play for fifth place. Lovre Milos scored once and won two of his three sprints in 22 minutes of play. The fifth place match will be August 7 at 7:00 p.m. against the United States.

August 7
U.S. women's water polo wins its third consecutive Gold Medal defeating Spain, 14-5. The U.S. has medaled in all six Olympics that women's water polo has been an event, now three Golds. Dan Klatt earns his third medal, all Golds, in his third Olympics with the team. For the players, it is the first Gold for Alys Williams and Jamie Neushul, second Gold for Kaleigh Gilchrist, and third Gold for Melissa Seidemann. Seidemann scored once in the match while Williams and Gilchrist each scored twice.

France men's volleyball won its first-ever medal and it was Gold holding off the ROC after winning the first two sets to score a five-set win, 3-2, by sets of 25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 21-25, 15-12. Kevin Tillie takes home his first-ever Olympic medal with Gold.

Lovre Milos and Croatia men's water polo finish their Olympic games in fifth place after a 14-11 victory of the United States. Milos scored once in 14 minutes of action.

U.S. women's volleyball secured the third Gold Medal for UCI of the games sweeping Brazil, 3-0, by score of 25-21, 25-20, 25-14. Michelle Bartsch-Hackley gets her first medal finishing with 14 points on 11 kills, two blocks, and one ace along with three digs
