‘Eaters Sweep Big West Women’s Track & Field Weekly Awards

IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine swept the Big West Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards as freshman Joy Anderson and graduate student Aoife Hernon were both recognized by the conference Tuesday afternoon.

Hernon was named the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 400m in a school-record 54.05 at the Challenge Cup in Fullerton. Hernon topped UCI's 35-year-old standard of 54.32 that was held by Shelly Tochluk. She now owns the top 400m times in both outdoor and indoor program history. Hernon also ranks fourth in the Big West this season.

Anderson was tabbed the Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week following a remarkable performance in her first career heptathlon at the Bryan Clay Multis in Azusa. Anderson compiled a program-best 5,572 points, breaking UCI Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Lauren Collins' school record of 5,549 that was set in 2009. Anderson's score ranks first in the conference, 10th in the West Region, and 14th in all of NCAA Division I this season. The Lakewood, California, native started the meet with a 100H personal-best 13.89 seconds, which puts her eighth on UCI's all-time charts. In her fourth event of the afternoon, Anderson cracked the top-10 again, running the Anteaters' sixth-fastest 200m at 23.98. She added season bests in the shot put (11.47m/37-7.75), long jump (5.28m/17-4), and 800m (2:12.16) over the course of the meet.

UC Irvine is back in action this week, traveling to the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16-18), Pacific Coast Invitational (April 16), Beach Invitational (April 17-18), and Mt. SAC Relays (April 17-18).
