
No. 6 UC Irvine Sweeps No. 18 CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. โ No. 6 UC Irvine swept No. 18 CSUN 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18) at the Premier America Credit Union Arena Saturday.
The Anteaters improved to 17-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big West on the strength of seven aces.
Senior William D'Arcy and freshman Andrej Jokanovic led UCI with 10 kills each. D'Arcy hit .500 (10-1-18), while Jokanovic fired three aces and had a match-high six digs and a block assist.
Middle blocker Trevor Clark was unstoppable, hitting .778 (7-0-9) with a team-best three total blocks (1 solo).
Freshman Andreas Brinck made the start and set a new personal best with seven kills, adding three digs and an ace.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Setter Cameron Kosty totaled 32 set assists, three kills, two block assists and an ace
>Libero Shane Aitken matched Jokanovic with a match-high six digs
>Middle blocker Micah Goss added three kills, an ace and a block assist
>CSUN (12-12, 0-8) was led by Jalen Phillips' match-high 11 kills
>UCI out-hit (.392-.324) CSUN, while the Matadors held an advantage in blocking (5.5-4.0) and digs (22-19) over the Anteaters
FIRST SET
>Two kills and a block helped CSUN out to a 6-2 lead
>The Matadors continued to roll with three kills in a row to open a 9-3 advantage
>UCI would chip away using a kill by William D'Arcy, two Matador errors and an ace by Andreas Brinck to close within 7-10
>UCI exploded for a 6-1 run that included two kills by Brinck and another from Andrej Jokanovic out of the back row plus a block by Micah Goss and Cameron Kosty to move the Anteaters in front 17-16
>Two Matador errors, one serving, one on a communication error and a kill by Jokanovic forced a CSUN timeout, 20-18
>The Matadors answered with the next two to knot the score at 20s
>Another CSUN service error and a block by Kosty and Trevor Clark made it 22-20
>A kill by D'Arcy ended the set, 25-23
SECOND SET
>UCI created some separation, 15-12, with four straight points, two Matador errors, a Jokanovic kill out of the of the backrow and a D'Arcy smash on an overpass
>A Jokanovic kill was followed by Kosty tapping the ball down, 18-14
>D'Arcy won a joust to get to set point and Brinck finished it off with a kill, 25-18
>Both teams were strong offensively with UCI hitting .538 (18-4-26) and CSUN .571 (9-1-14)
THIRD SET
>Back-to-back aces by Jokanovic and a kill by Clark on a long rally moved the Anteaters out to a 5-1 lead
>Another ace, this one by D'Arcy, extended the lead to 9-3
>UCI would remain in control and a 4-1 run, all CSUN errors, helped the Anteaters to a 23-15 lead
>A Matador service error would end the match, 25-18
