Women's Tennis Wins Seventh Straight, Defeats Colorado State 4-3

IRVINE, Calif. – In its seventh straight victory, UC Irvine women's tennis (9-4) defeated Colorado State in Irvine on Saturday, taking down the Broncos 4-3. With the victory UCI is now on the longest win streak of the program's history since 2013-14, when the Anteaters won 11 matches in a row.

Once again, UCI came out swinging in doubles and claimed the day's first point in just two matches. The Anteaters won on the No. 2 line with Maily Huynh/Yen Nhi Huynh combining for a swift 6-1 victory, followed by a point-clinching No. 3 line win by Quin Brady/Bella Pitchford. The pair of juniors won their match 6-4, leaving the No. 1 line match unfinished between CSU (3-7) and UCI tied at 4-4.

In singles play, the Anteaters won all of the three opening matches to clinch the day, starting with a victory from senior captain Carolyna Fowler on the No. 3 line. Fowler won in straight-sets, defeating her CSU opponent 6-1 and 6-4. Following the Fowler victories were wins coming from M. Huynh (No. 6 line) and Pitchford (No. 5 line). Pitchford recorded a clinching victory for the Anteaters for the second time on the season, and for the second time in a row after finishing off UCI's win against Seton Hall on Thursday.

FROM ASSISTANT COACH HERMONT LEGASPI

"We had different conditions today with our matches vs the Rams with wind blowing through all sorts of directions, but I'm just proud of this team for handling such situations with being patient and willing to take shots a bit early inside the baseline! The doubles point was crucial today, given that Colorado State is an experienced indoor team coming from altitude. Just like the last couple matches we've had this week, we were intentional with our shots and kept ourselves in the present moment. Despite the amount of fatigue and tennis played throughout this week, the energy from all courts were infectious and there's no other words to express how grateful I am for each of the players supporting one another! Let's end things off on a high note against Richmond on Tuesday!"

FROM BELLA PITCHFORD

"I'm super proud of our team for pulling out another win this week. Colorado State is a solid team and fought every step of the way, especially in my match. This week myself and the rest of the team have been strong mentally and have been able to pull out tough matches. Time to prepare for Richmond on Tuesday. Go 'Eaters!"

FROM MAILY HUYNH

"I'm really happy with how everyone played today. I think we adjusted well to the wind as a team, and didn't let that affect us. It was really important that we keep a strong mindset, and not let our games falter due to external circumstances. In my singles match, I think I was mentally stronger than my opponent, which gave me the win. Let's take this momentum into our match against Richmond! Go 'Eaters!"

UP NEXT

The Anteaters will close the non-conference portion of their six-match homestand against Richmond on Tuesday (Mar. 10), scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. first serve.
